This year, the 3rd FemBioBiz Final Competitions Award went to Kgomotso Sedimo of Keren Happuch Fragrance. The award ceremony was held at Botswana Innovation Hub (BIH) on Thursday the 22nd of August 2019.
Ms Tebogo Bagopi, Deputy Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Research, Science and Technology, said the FemBioBiz Program has reached over 500 women and trained over 250 women across 10 SADC countries. The success of the program based on participants is that 70% gained confidence through peer support and 60% of the participants opened markets through new networks and increased sales through better marketing.
She continued by saying that in Botswana, the first national winner was Sleek Foods who competed at the regionally and won R100 000 towards sealing business. In the second season, there were two winners, Nubian Seeds and Maungo-Craft; they both competed at regional and international level. She added that 53 women have been capacitated by the program with 18 making it to national competitions and 5 to regional competitions.
Furthermore, she said BIH is committed to continue supporting the winners with post acceleration interventions including access to networking, market access and targeted mentor programs.
“Winning FemBioBiz Final Competitions meant that there is something that we are doing and gave me hope that Keren Happuch Fragrance will grow”, Ms Sedimo concluded.
